President's Report

Greetings Phoenix Post! I hope everyone is having a great start to the New Year! It's hard to believe it's March already!

We had a great turn out for our January luncheon as Rich Houghton, Southwest Regional Vice President, discussed the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan and his goals for serving the Region. Mr. Houghton also inducted the new 2018 Phoenix Post Board!

Speaking of our new Board, I am very excited and honored to be serving with a great group of individuals.   Gabriel "Sam" Groves, our 1st VP of Programs, has put together a fantastic program this year. Check out our upcoming events on our Post's website. Some of our events will offer CE credits! Bruce Kay, 2nd VP of Memberships, will be looking for new members to join our Post and engage our current members. He's also available to help answer questions on how you can make the most of your membership! Doug Peters, our Secretary, has been working hard sending out event invitations and provide Post communications. If your firm has an exciting project or maybe you have a hiring need, let Doug know so we can get the word out! Last, our Treasurer is Bruce Preston. He's doing an amazing job keeping the Post's finances in check.

My goal as President is to serve you to the best of my ability. Please feel free to reach out if you have a great topic you want to share or wish to be more involved. I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Calendar of Events

Greetings, Folks!

Our Post is going to be very busy this calendar year. Our dynamic 2018 SAME Phoenix Post Program aligns our activities with the vision and events detailed in SAME National’s “RUN TO 2020 AND BEYOND ACTION PLAN.”  Here are just some of the highlights from our  Program.  Mark your calendars for these upcoming events and keep up!

1 March           Our monthly luncheon at the University Club of Phoenix will celebrate the achievements of Future Cities Team “Toro el Barcelona”, this year’s Winner of the SAME Society Award for Best Team Effort.  Their amazing model city will be on display and we’ll get an encore performance of their winning presentation.  We’ll also receive a presentation on community Water and Waste Water construction projects from Mike Luecker, State Engineer for AZ USDA’s Rural Development Program.

21 June            We’re holding a Small Business (SB) Symposium at the Wigwam Resort, 300 E. Wigwam Blvd,  Litchfield Park, AZ  85340.  It’s open to all SB’s, as well as to large businesses hoping to partner with SB’s.  We’ll have some sessions that showcase the SBA’s Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) program. And, as always, we’ll have a session on the latest updates on laws and statutes that affect all federal contractors.  As a STEM initiative, our agenda includes an Open House for Middle School students to meet women in the construction industry, i.e., general contractors, engineers, designers, and consultants, business owners, and entrepreneurs, who can advise and inspire students who are seeking careers in our industry.  The afternoon portion of our Symposium offers requirements briefings from various Government agencies.  (USAF, USACE, VA, and the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) are among our confirmed guest speakers thus far.) And the day will be capped off with a speed-dating session during which SB’s will meet one-on-one with the Government agency reps, as well as with large businesses seeking strategic alignments and mentor-protégé opportunities with SB’s.  It’s going to be a great day for networking!

28 September     We’re starting a new tradition with our first SAME Phoenix Post Golf Classic, scheduled to take place at the prestigious PebbleCreek Golf Resort here in the West Valley.  We’re partnering with the Gateway Golf Group, nationally-renowned professionals in the golfing industry, to offer our players a first-class golfing experience.  The “save-the-date” announcement will be going out shortly.

25 October      Our Warrior Transition Workshop and Job Fair will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Midtown, 4000 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012.  We’ll be offering our venue to the facilitators at the Luke AFB TAP Program. Our ambitious agenda will provide  sessions on preparing for post-military service employment.  We’ll cover resumes and interviewing skills, leveraging military engineering and technical experience, and for those who want to be self-employed business owners, advice regarding entrepreneurship.   And, of course, we’re planning on companies to be on hand to interview and, hopefully, offer employment opportunities to our attendees.

By the way, our Post Board is in correspondence with the CMAA AZ Chapter. Their president, Mr. Willie Paiz, shares our enthusiasm in our two organizations getting together on future events.  We’ve shared the main highlights of our 2018 program with Mr. Paiz, and he’s shared news of his events with us.  We’re definitely planning on developing a training event for the near future that will mutually benefit the CMAA AZ and our SAME Phoenix Post membership.  So stay tuned!
